1 janv. 1687 - Principia Mathematica

Description:

Isaac Newton

Principia was one of Newton's most important books. It covered three main topics: gravity (mass and weight), motion and calculus. Newton claims that the universe is made up of matter, movement, and space. The law of universal gravitation was a single law that could explain the behavior of objects and phenomena, and it stated that gravity was the centripetal force that keeps the planets in their orbits around the sun. It unified celestial and terrestrial physics completely. Newton created three laws of motion. The law of inertia, objects keep their state of motion unless acted upon by an outside force, opposed Aristotle's ideas on motion (force was necessary to maintain motion). Interestingly, Newton did not try to explain the causes of gravity. This is representative of a new type of science in which things are controlled and predictable, but not necessarily understood. Principia is the paradigm of the modern mathematical methods. Principia was written in a Euclidean format with definitions, axioms, and propositions.
