Born on August 30, 1948, in present-day Summit, Illinois, Fred Hampton became a prominent civil rights activist based in Chicago. Through his involvement with the NAACP as a youth organizer, he showed promising leadership skills. Later, as chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party (BPP), and deputy chairman of the national BPP, he garnered attention from the FBI who saw his effective leadership as a threat. He was targeted and assassinated by the government under the COINTELPRO initiative.
