It was the first full-length motion picture with synchronized dialogue, thus paving the way for "the talkies" to gain popularity.

2011 Academy Award winning film "The Artist" took a lot of inspiration from "The Jazz Singer" (and was also the first silent film to win an Academy Award since 1927's "Wings").
