Bartolomeu Dias sailed around the bottom tip of Africa, which proved to the Portuguese that there was a water route to India. He named the tip the Cape of Good Hope to encourage more exploration, however there were bad storms there. Sailors believed that Africa's coast was never-ending, but this discovery proved otherwise.
