At this point, painful experiments that usually resulted in the death of the subject were in full swing. This was the peak of Unit 731, from the standpoint of Shiro Ishii. Vivisections without anesthesia were performed daily on subjects strapped onto the operating table. A medical assistant from the unit is quoted describing the first vivisection he ever performed: "The fellow knew that it was over for him, and so he didn't struggle when they led him into the room and tied him down. But when I picked up the scalpel, that's when he began screaming. I cut him open from the chest to the stomach, and he screamed terribly, and his face was all twisted in agony. He made this unimaginable sound, he was screaming so horribly. But then finally he stopped. This was all in a day’s work for the surgeons, but it really left an impression on me because it was my first time.”
Sometimes vivisections were performed to test how their innards reacted to different pathogens or illnesses, sometimes it was because the subject was pregnant and they wanted to know how the fetus reacted to trauma and diseases injected into the mother. Prisoners with syphilis were forced to rape other prisoners so that they could be tested on to see how it spreads throughout the body. Prisoners were subjected to poisonous gas in an effort to create a more powerful type of poison gas. Prisoners were left outside in the cold until their limbs either froze off or could no longer be moved, to test the best way to treat frostbite. Prisoners were placed in pressure chambers and experimented on to see how much pressure the human body can handle before their eyes popped out. Many workers of Unit 731 morally justified themselves by seeing it as a fundamental cause for Japan to win the war. The workers considered subjects as less than human, declaring them Marutas, meaning "wooden logs". At this point, Shiro Ishii was confident that the Unit would be long-term and last as long as he saw fit.
