Austin ordered James Fanin Jr. and Jim Bowie to lead ninety men from San Francisco de la Espada Mission to protect an area near a town. There they decide to camp for the night. Cos took his chance and sent out Domingo Ugartechea and 275 men with two canons and attacked. They made the Texans travel across the land to a river and trap them there. No one was wounded until Bowie told a company to go to the front. Then someone was very wounded. This caused Texas to shoot and kill almost all the infantry and artillery.
