19 janv. 1661 - Virginia House of Bourgees’ law - 1661

Description:

Virginian individuals would bring in Indians as indentured servants but they didn’t have a good immune system, so they’d die quickly and they couldn’t work. So the Virginian people decided to bring in African individuals as indentured servants. They couldn’t run away and they were used to farming so they were able to farm for a long time, they also had a good immune system. So because of all of that, in 1661, the Virginia House of Burgesses passed a law that would make African individuals slaves for their entire lives instead of just a small period of time. (3-15 years, depending on age)

The 1661 event of the Virginia House of Burgess passing a law that made African individuals slaves for life is important because it shows how people choose to live back in 1661. Tobacco was what individuals in Virginia made all of their money off of, so they decided to make others do their work for them.
