Despite its losses in recent battles, Japan refused to surrender. The United States faced two options: preparing for a collapse operation, an amphibious invasion of Allied troops into the Japanese Empire, or the use of the atomic bomb, a weapon used by US scientists only during these months in the Trinity experiment. US President Harry Truman chose to use the atomic bomb. In August 1945, over a three-day period, two nuclear bombs were dropped on Japan: one on Hiroshima and the other on Ngasaki. Both of these bombs killed about 135,000 Japanese, and on August 15, 1945, the Japanese empire surrendered.
