Sir Robert Walpole was a political figure in the 18th century who is credited as becoming the first prime minister of England. He became one of the most important and impressive British politicians in history and did this through his pragmatism and the South Sea bubble scandal. During his political career he made many enemies, and was even thrown in the Tower of London for years due to his political alignment and once he was released he used the recent scandal to launch a political campaign to clear out corruption from the government, and gained much political influence. Even though he did change the British government by removing many of its officials, once he was in power he stayed mostly moderate and changed very little, leaving office much like he left it.
