7 mars 1857 - Dred Scott v. Sanford

Description:

Landmark Supreme court case, ruled that (1) any African-American whose ancestors were imported and sold as slaves were not U.S. Citizens and that Congress had no power to regulate slavery in any territories outside the original colonies. The case was sparked when Dred Scott was taken by his owner to free states and territories, and he sued for his freedom. Supreme Court Chief Justice Taney hoped that this ruling would put an end to slavery debate forever, but it didn't, and was one of the causes of the Civil War
