Police responded to calls from employees at Jack in the Box who stated a man — later identified as Tarin — was acting in a threatening manner. About 2:20 a.m., police said a responding officer spotted a man matching Tarin's description near the intersection of Lohman Avenue and Nacho Drive.

The officer, in a marked police unit, shined a spotlight on the man, who was on foot. Tarin responded by firing shots at the officer, striking him, police said.

Responding agencies located Tarin in the parking lot of Home Depot, where police say Tarin pointed a handgun at officers and fired at least one round, police said. The responding officers fired back, killing Tarin.
