1 janv. 1854 - The Kansas-Nebraska Act

Description:

Under the Missouri Compromise, there could be no slave states permitted to the union that were in the Louisiana Purchase or north of it. This land was Indian Territory. Senator Douglas proposed to allow settlers into the land and create a free state called Nebraska. Southerners did not want this, because they were hoping to expand slavery. To appease them, he made the Kansas-Nebraska Act. This act repealed the Missouri Compromise and created two territories, Kansas and Nebraska. The land would be a free state or slave state, depending on the popular vote of that area. This was devastating to the political system. It destroyed the Whig party. Now, ex-Whigs, Free-Soilers, and abolitionists united and formed the Republican party.
