22 déc. 1807 - Embargo Act

Description:

Description: This Act essentially cut off all exports, of American goods, effectively eliminating foreign trade. Jefferson thought this act would force European nations to stop violating American rights at sea. They were dreadfully wrong.

Significance: This event was significant as it caused social, political, and economic unrest in the colonies. It especially caused damage to social structures in New England, as many regions in the north depended on trade with Great Britain and shipbuilding. Without any source of profit, many port cities in the north became ghost towns, as countless individuals deserted these towns. This was a drastic social change for the northern United States, as the established social hiearchy collapsed.
