The rods are made of boron which slows the reactivity, however the tips were made of graphite which speeds up the reaction. In an instant all the water turns to steam under the rods and causes a build up of pressure. The rods then start jumping up and down, each one weighing 350Kg. The protective shielding then failed getting ripped off by the build up of pressure.
