25 août 1572 - St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre
Description:
This was one of many wars between the Roman Catholics and French Huguenots in France. The slaughter was organized by Catherine de Medicis, who worried about the influence of Huguenot preacher Gaspard II de Coligny’s influence on her son, Henry IX. She set up the plot to kill Coligny, but after a full-blown civil battle broke out, an estimated 3,000 were killed.
