One main branch of the Nile carries water into the western desert. It feeds into a lake in the middle of a large fertile area known as the 'Faiyum'.The temple of Karnak is a large temple complex. Although the first parts of this complex were built in the Middle Kingdom, later pharaohs added buildings, halls and chapels.
