Description:
After the stationing of British regular forces in the colonies during peacetime, many officers became dissatisfied with the drop in citizen aid they received. Thus, their commander, Thomas Gage, plead with Parliament to legislate something to alleviate the situation. Consequently, in 1765 the Quartering Act of 1765 was passed. This required the colonists to house soldiers in their own homes and, if necessary, in inns and alehouses. A year after the passing of the act, more than 1,000 British soldiers arrived in New York, where the New York Provincial Assembly flatly refused to allow the soldiers housing. The Governor of the colony was subsequently decommissioned, and 6 years after the passing of the act, New York gave funding to the soldiers. Aside from Pennsylvania, every other colony refused to comply, as they felt some rights in the Bill of Rights were being infringed upon.Ajouté au bande de temps:
