1 janv. 1730 - Great Awakening Begins

Description:

Complementary to the Age of Reason was the Great Awakening, a religious revival in the 1730s focused in the colonial Americas. Passionate, vivid “New Light” preachers called like Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield began to use detailed imagery of hell to frighten the colonists into seeking salvation. The conviction and gripping nature of the sermons are part of what allowed the Great Awakening to sweep the colonies, as huge crowds would gather to listen. Soon, schools and churches were founded throughout the colonies to facilitate this New Light movement, causing division between the conflicting message of Old and New Light preachers. Mainstream religion began to fracture, leading to many more religious denominations, which propagated a spirit of religious toleration, self decision, and individualism. This was important to the revolution because not only did it increase the spirit of independence, but it also lessened the influence of the old British church, and brought the individual colonies closer together.
