It was in the 390s BCE that several Gallic tribes decided to invade the Etruscan civilization of Italy. They battled with various Italian towns and villages venturing further down the peninsular until eventually the city of Rome became aware of the invasion. According to stories, as the Gauls approached the outer fortresses, alarmed flocks of geese awoke the Roman population to the oncoming threat which gave them time to bear arms and defend their city. After fighting off the Gauls, Rome went through a military reformation and divided their armies into legions of 5,000 men. This awoke a hunger for more and these legions began a conquest of the whole of Italy. Spreading out from Rome they made alliances with the territories they conquered which gave them an increase in funds and soldiers to continue spreading their power slowly throughout the country for the next hundred years.
