Description:

After Duck Lake, there were several small battles throughout April. Towards the end of the month, the government troops headed towards Batoche, Riel's headquarters. The Metis and the First Nation had less than 300 men in their militia and they faced a government force of over 800. Dumont, knowing they were outnumbered, wanted to use a series of surprise attacks, taking advantage of his knowledge of the land. Riel refused and claimed God was on their side and wanted them to fight against their enemy at Batoche.

The battle began on May 9th with a three-day standoff. After a series of failed attacks, the government troops decided to charge the Metis frontline. The Metis militia numbered only 50-60 men and were out of ammunition. The Metis were forced to retreat and on May 15, Riel surrendered. He believe a public trial would shed some light on the Metis' struggle against the government. Dumont and the others escaped to the United States.
