Christopher Columbus and his crew embarked on a voyage to find a shorter route from Europe to India and the Orient with three medium-sized ships. After thirty-four days at sea, land was first sighted at 0200 on 12 October 1492, by a sailor named Rodrigo de Triana. Columbus would later assert that he had first seen the land and, thus, earned the reward of 10,000 maravedís. Columbus called the island San Salvador, an unknown island in the present-day Bahamas or Turks and Caicos. This voyage began the Columbian Exchange and the European colonization of the Americas.
