12 mars 1567 - The Red Lion

Description:

The first London theatre was the ‘Red Lion’ in Whitechapel, built in 1567 by John Brayne. It had a purpose-built 40’ × 30’ stage raised 5’ above the audience and offered a London home to touring companies but was little different from the previous tradition of playing in the courtyards of inns. Furthermore it was situated outside the city walls on open farmland so was a long way for audiences to travel, particularly in winter.
