Chadwick was a public health campaigner who wrote a report on 'the sanitary condition of the labouring population of Great Britain' which he payed for himself and became the bestselling book of its time.
The report established the necessity of clean water and drainage of waste facilities for public health and his campaigning lead to the public health act of 1848.
