This was the election where Democratic Presidential Candidate William Bryan Jennings against Republican Candidate William McKinley. Bryan campaigned for ending the gold standard, which would effectively increase food prices to help farmers. McKinely, on the other hand, promoted the gold standard and high tariffs.
