29 août 1949 - Final Soviet nuclear test
Description:
Mere months after the end of the Berlin Blockade, on the 29th of August, the Soviet Union exploded its first nuclear weapon. The weapon was tested at Semipalatinsk, in Kazakhstan. The explosion was detected by a CIA spy plane. The explosion was tested on buildings and animals put in cages, to test its effects on human-like animals. The power of the nuclear weapon was similar to that of the Trinity nuclear test during WW2. Following the test, a german nuclear scientist, Klaus Fuchs, working for the US was arrested. In the aftermath, the US would start developing the Hydrogen Bomb. This was a victory for the Soviet Union, as the US would no longer be the only nation with nuclear weaponry.
