15 août 1954 - Senator of Vermont, Ralph E. Flanders, leads a vote to condemn McCarthy
Description:
Throughout McCarthy's time as a Republican senator, he practiced what was and is known as "McCarthyism"-- a "campaign" of tracking down communist activity inside the U.S.governent and institutions. His accusations caused many to become blacklisted or to lose their jobs, even though most of them were not actually proven to be communists. His decline began when he went as far as accusing the military of practicing communism and refusing to respond. His decline led Ralph E. Flanders, senator of Vermont, to condemn McCarthy for his actions and ultimately end his reign of McCarthyism
Much like the Julius and Ethel case, McCarthy illustrated the overly tense atmosphere during the Cold War. The tense atmosphere seemed to make way for more accusations than actual claims with evidence when McCarthy practiced his McCarthyism (if there was not this tense and insecure atmosphere, more just and orderly decisions would have been conducted).
