NASA was created by Congress in October 1958 to take the matters of the Space Race away from the military's hands, allowing for a more clear and scientific approach. With NASA, outside of the 1950s. the U.S. was able to send a human into space and a human into orbit in the following years. The most recognizable event that was completed by NASA is Apollo 11, which is when the U.S. succeeded at having the first humans walk on the moon.

NASA was ultimately the reason that the U.S. emerged victorious at the end of the Space Race. When Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin became the first two humans to walk on the moon, there was nothing that the Soviet Union could do to come out on top. The reason that NASA was funded so heavily was because of the economic prosperity of the 1950s and the increased respect for scientists after the hydrogen bomb tests and the nuclear bomb tests from WWII.
