1 mai 1960 - Soviets shot down a U-2 plane

Description:

In the 1960’s, Eisenhower suggested that the Soviets and Americans be able to fly over each other’s territory in order to prevent any surprise nuclear attacks. However, the Soviet Union denied this suggestion so the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) began secret spy flights over Soviet territory using planes called U-2s. In May, a U-2 plane was shot down by the Soviets and the pilot, Francis Gary Powers, was captured. The overall significance of this event contributed to the rise of tensions between the Soviet Union and the United States during the World War. Red is the color for this event because it was a clear communist victory considering the Soviets captured a U.S. plane which exposed the U-2 spy fleet.
