President Obama announced that he is willing to get into greater engagement with Cuba, but only a little bit
He ordered to lift restrictions on family travel, money transfers, and to allow more cellular and satellite service by U.S telecommunications.

This event is significant because it started a relationship with Cuba and the United States. It also helped the families that had family members in Cuba to be able to support them with them being able to make unlimited trips, unrestricted financial aid, and to pay for cellular services. This is why this event is important.
