Samuel Gompers founds the American Federation of Labor, a union of skilled craftsmen who advocated simple approaches to simple goals: bettery pay, less hours, better working conditions. This strategy worked very well, as he attracted substantial support from the government and the public. The AFL largely excluded anyone who wasn't a skilled white male worker, though there were exceptions. (Effect: skilled laborers were able to successfully obtain better pay, hours, etc. through the union) (Continuity: unions grew in size and strength during the period)
