Jonathan Edwards began giving sermons at his church in Massachusetts, starting a wave of protestant evangelism and widespread church membership known as the First Great Awakening. In 1741 Edwards would give his famous "Sinners in the hand of an Angry God" sermon, which would become a hallmark of the Great Awakening. Edwards was one of the first protestant evangelists and he helped start one of the largest religious revivals in American history. (Effect: beginning of protestant evangelism in the Americas, first mass revival in American history)
