influenced by art/culture of India, Asia, and Greece (greek traditions w/ indian subject matter)
2 monumental structures: shakyamuni to the east (120ft) and vairochana to the west (175ft), both surrounded by little niches
statues were once golden and adorned w/ gems, and covered in pigments of different hues
Mullah Omar ordered Taliban forces to demolish the larger in 2001
