In 1951, 13 black parents in Topeka, Kansas were persuaded to attempt to enroll their children in white schools by the NAACP to challenge segregation laws. When they were all inevitably refused entry, they sued the Topeka Board of Education. Ultimately the state court would rule in favor of the Board, but when the Supreme Court reviewed the case in addition to 4 other similar cases sponsored by the NAACP, it ruled that segregated facilities were inherently unequal, and reversed the "separate but equal" doctrine set in Plessy v. Ferguson. (Change: Supreme Court ruled against racist policies, federal government began supporting legislation targeted against racial injustice)
