12 mai 1902 - Anthracite Coal Strike

Description:

The Anthracite Coal strike began when 50,000 miners walked off the job, demanding a 10-20% wage increase, an 8 hour work day, and recognition of their union. As the strike drew on, the region's supply of coal dwindled. Schools and hospitals began to get cold, and conditions for riots were brewing in cities. As a result, Roosevelt called the mine operators and the UMW to the White House so he could arbitrate negotiations with them. The UMW agreed to negotiations, but the operators proved unwilling to cooperate-that is until Roosevelt threatened to send the military to seize the mines and have the troops operate them. This scared the operators back to the table, and ultimately a resolution was reached that both sides found acceptable. Never before had a president used his power to arbitrate a conflict such as this before, and it represented an expansion of presidential power in this way. (Change: president using powers to settle labor issues)
