1 mars 1798 - XYZ Affair

Description:

As a result of the U.S. signing Jay's Treaty with Britain, France spontaneously begain capturing American merchant ships. Relations with France began to deteriorate after that, so President John Adams sent three diplomats to restore the relationship between France and the U.S. When they got there, they found that they were not able to meet with the French foreign minster, and instead they were approached by three intermediaries, labelled X, Y, and Z. They demanded a massive bribe from the U.S. to allow the diplomats to speak with the foreign minister. Adams made the incident public news, and the U.S. began preparing for war. (Continuity: attempting to uphold U.S. beliefs about inalienable rights across the world)
