29 nov 1864 - Sand Creek Massacre

Description:

In 1858, large deposits of gold were found in the Rocky Mountains, setting off a gold rush. However, between those deposits and U.S. territory laid a large amount of treaty recognized land that belonged to the Cheyenne and Arapaho Natives. As thousands flooded across the border, the settlers competed with the Natives for resources, and many tried to stay there. The U.S. opened negotiations with the natives for acquisition of the territory, and at the end the chiefs had signed a treaty that gave them territory 1/13th the size of what they had previously. Many natives were influriated with this, and refused to obey the provisions of the treaty, staying on their land. The outbreak of the Civil War led to the organization of military forces in Colorado, who began attacking Native settlements without warning. One dispute occurred at an encampment led by Black Kettle. Despite the natives raising a white flag not long after the fighting started, Colorado forces massacred as many Natives as they could, most of which were women and children. (Continuity: animosity between U.S. and Native American tribes)
