6 août 1882 - Chinese Exclusion Act is Passed

Description:

The act prohibited all immigration of Chinese laborers for 10 years, but allows all Chinese living within the U.S. as of Nov. 7, 1880 to remain. This is the first attempt of the U.S. to regulate immigration across racial lines (change). This law paves the way for a series of laws directed against Chinese immigration over the next 30 or so years. (Cause: large amounts of Chinese immigration and their willingness to work for very little made them a perfect source of labor, meaning they took white people's jobs. They encountered racial hostility for doing so. Effect is the exclusion act.)
