1 janv. 1898 - 1898 - The Spanish-American War, ostensibly begun to support the cause of Cuban independence, quickly evolved into a pursuit of an empire for the United States. By the end of the war, the United States had acquired territories including Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines.
