1 janv. 1816 - 1816 - The tariff of 1816 began the US practice of protectionism to prevent foreign businesses from gaining a foothold in America. The practice was intended to force American businesses to flourish and to allow them to set lower prices than foreign competitors. In that regard, it was successful, and American business and manufacturing expanded rapidly in the early 20th century.
