Description:

Pericles commissioned the architect Ictinus to build the new Parthenon. The temple was begun in 447 BC and was structurally complete by 438 BC. The Parthenon was built of Pentelic marble which lent itself well to the use of "optical refinements" such as: the convex curvature of the stylobate and entablature; the entasis in the columns; the thickening of columns at the corners; the inward tilting of the columns and of the outer face of the sanctuary spaces. The building incorporates many refinements which deviate from simple rectangularity and give it a sense of harmonious proportion and beauty.
