24 janv. 1857 - Establishment of Universities in India

Description:

Universities in Calcutta, Bombay and Madras were established as per the directives of Education despatch 1854.

These universities were modelled after University of London. University Acts defined the roles of Chancellor (Governor), Vice Chancellor, and Members. The total members should be at least 30 and were appointed for life.

Universities were primarily affiliating bodies. Purpose was to award degrees to deserving candidates in Arts, Science and Commerce to students studying in Affiliating colleges. Affiliation to university was not limited by geographical location. For ex: Calcutta University- catered to Bengal, Assam, and Ceylon.
