19 mars 1865 - March 1865: the Freedman's Bureau was set up by the Federal Government (Its purpose was to support freed slaves in the short term and provide the basis for their long term security. The Bureau promoted the work of black self- help groups, that provided education of children and supported adults financially. This would help train black lawyers, scientists and teachers, thus indirectly fostering future black leaders.)
