On February 19, 1945 the Battle of Iwo Jima was won by the United States which resulted in a month long battle that was originally expected to take less than a week. The Battle of Iwo Jima was the first real battle fought in the Pacific theater during World War 2 and it served as a shocking reminder as to how resilient and brutal the Japanese could be. After this battle, the Allies realized that the fight against Japan was going to be a bloody one.
