Description:

In 1820 Henry Clay worked out the Missouri Compromise allowing Missouri to enter the United States as a Slave State and Maine as Free State. When Missouri was applying to become a state there were 22 states evenly divided between free and slave states. Missouri would tilt to balance to more slave states, so Maine as created as Free State. (The compromise also made all of Louisiana territory above a latitude of 36°30′ North and would forever change how the United States would expand to the West.)
