- most poets lived in the provinces of London or Italy etc.
- where they had previously lived in central London
- eg. Blake/ Keats - lived in the marginal parts of London
- not seen as high-class individuals
- the city becomes an object of alienation - you will not feel at home there - only when experienced alone can the city become a piece of landscape
