12 nov 1968 - Brezhnev Doctrine

Description:

3 Months after sending troops into Czechoslovakia, Brezhnev made a speech outlining his position on threats to communism: contrasting Khrushchev's case by case approach, he said that he wouldn't allow communists regimes to be brought down by external invasion of internal rebellion.
This damaged relations with China which was in the middle of a cultural revolution so Mao was concerned the the USSR meant to interfere there.
The USA initially suspended all talks with the USSR but newly elected NIxon didn't want the progress that had been made to be wasted and so decided to interpret tyhe doctrine as a defensive policy that only affected the Eastern Bloc where the Americans didn't intefere.
