17 mai 1960 - Paris Peace Summit
Description:
The Paris peace summit was supposed to be about the co-operation of French, British, American and Soviet leaders to ensure peace but was overshadowed by the U2 crisis.
Due to the refusal of Eisenhower to apologise as demanded by Khrushchev, the Soviet leader stormed out of the summit with 'righteous anger' and declared that Eisenhower was not welcome in the USSR . This meant that the summit left superpowers on worse relations than before. .
Some argue that ,because of pressures on him from those in Moscow who didn't agree with peaceful coexistence and because he felt he had the upper hand in the cold war from an espionage and arms/space race point of view, Khrushchev had wanted the summit to fail all along (it gave his propaganda victory much publicity).
