1 août 1955 - First U2 test flight

Description:

The U2 plane was first flown and testing on its capabilities continued over the next few years.
The plane was found to be capable of sustaining altitudes of 70,000 ft for over 3000 miles with its combination of jet and glider.
As with all aircfarft tests, the testing was dangerous - with landing particularly difficult. There were 3 fatalities in 1956 alone and an incident that resulted in the loss of an aircraft but the planes were fit for purpose.
