10 janv. 699 av. J.-C. - Archaic Greek Sculpture

Description:

circa 700-500 B.C.
There was no distinction between sacred and secular. Sculpture initially followed Egyptian forms but changed with greater understanding of anatomy. However, sculptures often had really odd smiles, termed “archaic smile”. There were two main types of statue: a kouros (pl. kouroi) was a standing nude male statue and a kore (pl. korai) was a standing draped female. There were also seated woman forms. Statues were commissioned by aristocrats for temples and memorials.
