18 sept. 1791 - Haitian Revolution (1791-1804)

Description:

The Haitian Revolution occurred from 1791 to 1804 and was begun by a large scale slave revolt. It all started when the slaves liberated themselves, and soon wanted to rule over their island. A society was formed, which was led by Toussaint Louverture, who was a former slave and an incredibly effective military leader. After taking political control, they put a new constitution into place but did not declare independence due to the threat of Napoleon's French army. After feeling threatened nonetheless, Napoleon’s army was driven out of the area, and the establishment of Haiti began in 1804.
